Primary colors
Intuit has an exercise that it calls "Colors," which is sort of like the organization's version of a Meyers-Briggs or other personal profiling mechanism. There are four colors, with the following attributes (I am, of course, grossly simplifying this for my sake and yours):
red = driven, goal-oriented
yellow = interpersonal skills, people-oriented
green = structure, rules-based
blue = ideas, conceptual thinkers
My team did an exercise today where we had taken profiles evaluating our personal colors and then had some group discussions about how to understand the inherent "attractor" and "allergic" colors for each person and put that knowlege to use in fashioning better communication, interaction, etc. Then Avinash's team joined us to do some intra-team work in the same fashion.
I was thinking about this today when I came home and Devon and Walt had just finished eating dinner. I realize that it's very early in her personal development, but at least at this point in her life, Devon definitely shows a lot of yellow in her interactions. She really loves to be around other kids, probabably one result of going to day care early in life; and in general, the more kids around her, the better she likes it.
The other day when we were at the playground, an older kid (about 4 or so) came up to her as she was playing in the sand. He sat down next to her and started playing with her: he piled a big load of sand between her legs as she was seated and kept talking about how "Baby has a big sandcastle." While she's not at the age where she actively plays with kids (as opposed to engaging in parallel play, playing next to someone but not necessarily with them), she was enjoying having this older child interact with her. After a while she got tired of it and just got up, knocking over the sand castle (really a pile of sand, I don't think anyone other than a 4 year old could possibly term it a "castle"). But she's always happier when she's got other kids around her than when she's by herself or just with the two of us.

That is such an interesting observation about Devon. It will be great to reflect on this in 5 years and then 10 years and see if this holds true. Great idea to write about this!
