Book club comes to us
Last night I hosted my book club, and it was a really fun event for Devon. Luckily we got her to eat before everyone showed up, since eating these days can be a trying event. She seems to be passing into a phase where she's all about testing limits -- last night we had to give her a time out because she kept throwing things on the floor. Then she tried to come into the kitchen again (after we put her in her room for the time out), and I put her in again, and she really went into a tantrum.
Of course Delia, one of the book club members, showed up just as Devon was having a full screaming fit in her room (Delia does not have children, so she's not used to loud wailing at all hours of the day and night). However, after I went in to talk to Devon, and especially after she realized that someone new had come over, she really perked up. We went into the kitchen, and Devon insisted on climbing up on "her" chair and checking Delia out -- and, after she got a little more comfortable with her, turning on the charm and showing off a bit.
When the full crowd of 5 got here (including Alexandra, who has been in Paris for the last few months but made a visit that luckily coincided with the book club -- and she came straight from the airport to our apartment, which is a total feat), Devon started to enjoy herself quite a bit. She was busy walking around and checking everyone out (although she was careful to avoid anyone who wanted to hug her or pat her head -- she wasn't ready to be that familiar with any stranger) and started to talk to them. At one point, after about three women had filed in, Devon said, "L'il Teapot," which means "sing I'm a Little Teapot to me." I launched into it and afterwards Tricia told me to make sure I didn't quit my day job!
Devon just loved being the center of attention of lots of people, all of whom provided her with a stage to ham it up (one that was clearly a lot better than the parental stage). Even after we went into her room to go to bed she kept saying, "Kitchen, kitchen" so she could be back in the center of the action. She made one last jail break during teeth brushing, but I think she was really getting tired at that point: she was doing laps around the kitchen table (full of people now) and slipped and hit her head. It did succeed, however, in providing a convenient excuse to hightail it back into her room and turn out the lights.
